This month university staff in my constituency and across the country are on strike over changes to their terms and conditions, affecting particularly their pension.
I know this is a decision they have not taken lightly and I fully support their right to withhold their Labour. What is important for both the students and the staff is for the employers to get back round the negotiating table and
I signed EDM619 about academic pensions many weeks ago on 17 January: https://www.parliament.uk/edm/2017-19/619/.
I have also raised the strike in the House of Commons demanding an urgent debate from the government: https://www.facebook.com/IanMurrayMP/videos/1634605163323285/.
I’ve written to all the vice chancellors at Edinburgh and Heriot Watt Universities and also passed a motion at my local constituency Labour Party meeting on Thursday evening. This will be submitted to our Scottish Labour Conference next month to seek a debate and formal position.
I hope a solution can be found as soon as possible.
